Learn how to observe and take pictures over three busy days in the celestial calendar, with a meteor shower, a partial eclipse of the sun and the biggest planet in our solar system, Jupiter, burning bright. Wannabe stargazer Jonathan Ross gets a crash course in planet spotting in his own back garden; while in Hawaii, Liz Bonnin reports from the edge of a volcano to help explain how the Earth was formed.

Part 2

Professor Brian Cox and Dara O Briain look at images of the partial eclipse of the sun and investigate how stars are born. Liz Bonnin shows us the sun in a different light - live from Hawaii; while novice star spotter Jonathan Ross discovers the key to observing constellations. Plus astronomer Mark Thompson explains the best way to observe the Quadrantid meteor shower.

Part 3

Jonathan Ross joins Professor Brian Cox and Dara O Briain at Jodrell Bank, home of one of Britain’s biggest telescopes, for an hour of live stargazing. The search for extraterrestrial life is the subject of Liz Bonnin’s report atop one of the world’s highest observatories in Hawaii, Brian chats to the crew of the International Space Station as they orbit the earth at 17,500 miles an hour, and Dara experiences what it is like to be in space.

Painted over five centuries ago, Filippo Lippi’s nativity is like no other: the birth of Christ in a dark, wooded wilderness. Its beauty inspired Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli. But it also conceals a deeply personal story. It was painted for Cosimo de’ Medici, a wealthy banker who feared that his money was dragging him straight to hell.

The artist’s life was equally surprising. One of the most celebrated painters of his day, Filippo Lippi was also a Carmelite friar, but he was no stranger to the temptations of the flesh, to which he frequently yielded. Shortly before painting his Adoration, he caused uproar by seducing a twenty year-old nun. His paintings rejoice not just in divine beauty, but in that of women.

In later times, the Adoration’s history was interwoven with that of rulers and dictators. It became a bargaining chip after Napoleon’s allies seized twenty merchant ships. And in the 20th century, it was hidden by the Nazis in a potassium mine, where American troops stumbled upon it. The painting even inspired mutiny amongst US officers when the American authorities tried to appropriate it for the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Far from being accepted as part of the celebrations of Jesus’ birth, over the centuries carols have been banned by both church and state. The carols we sing seem set in stone and yet they can have up to 400 regional variations. Individual carols have caused controversy - While Shepherds Watched had to be cleaned up by the Victorians for being too crude and there’s a suspicion that O Come All Ye Faithful was a call to 18th century Jacobites to rebel.

The documentary celebrates the enduring power of the carol with a variety of performances from folk singer Bella Hardy to the choir of Truro Cathedral.

Timeshift profiles a new wave of Italian crime fiction that has emerged to challenge the conventions of the detective novel. There are no happy endings in these noir tales, only revelations about Italy’s dark heart - a world of corruption, unsolved murders and the mafia.

The programme features exclusive interviews with the leading writers from this new wave of noir, including Andrea Camilleri (creator of the Inspector Montalbano Mysteries) and Giancarlo De Cataldo (Romanzo Criminale), who explains how his work as a real-life investigating judge inspired his work. From the other side of the law, Massimo Carlotto talks about how his novels were shaped by his wrongful conviction for murder and years spent on the run from the police.

The film also looks at the roots of this new wave. Carlo Emilio Gadda (That Awful Mess) used the detective novel to expose the corruption that existed during Mussolini’s fascist regime and then, after the Second World War, Leonardo Sciascia’s crime novels (The Day of The Owl) tackled the rise of the Sicilian mafia. These writers established the rules of a new kind of noir that drew on real events and offered no neat endings.

Also featuring Italian writers Carlo Lucarelli and Barbara Baraldi, the film uses rarely seen archive from Italian television.
