本片以两小时篇幅展示文化大革命的起因和历史。它以1964年到1971年间的事件为主体，上溯五十年代的大跃进和四十年代的延安整风，下延1980年对“四人帮”的公开审判，时间跨度纵横数十载。影片以新中国同龄人的经历为主要线索，探讨建国后不断激进的革命教育与革命文化对这代人的影响，讲述当时处于不同地位的人的不同经历与感受，以及他们或主动或被迫卷入政治运动的复杂动机，从而力图再现一代人由热衷乌托邦理想转变为面对现实独立思考的心路历程。影片不以编年记事的方式来综述文革，它侧重于展示曲折的个人故事和家庭的悲欢离合，以此来发掘文革这样一个对千百万个人的命运产生重大影响的历史事件的内涵。
