　【早春】Early Spring

Halcyon River Diaries is an entirely fresh approach to natural history programme making: a four-part documentary series made by a family for families, and an engaging and original mix of wildlife and observational documentary.

Following the success of My Halcyon River (BBC2 Natural World), and filmed and produced by award-winning wildlife cameraman Charlie Hamilton James, it is an intimate look at the wildlife of a typical English river, as seen through the eyes of a family who live beside it and love it.

Charlie is a wildlife cameraman; he spends most of his life travelling the world filming exotic species in incredible locations. But this year Charlie, his wife Philippa, and their sons are on a mission closer to home; they want to get to know the wild neighbours who live along the river next to their house, by making an intimate film diary of their lives. The results are full of surprises and often hilarious.

In this programme they discover the secret life of the nocturnal otter on British rivers and film unique behaviour of a river otter hunting at night.

The boys recreate the river bed in an old tank to investigate the family life of the stickleback. This works brilliantly for the film diary, until all the fish start disappearing, but just who is eating them?

Conservationist Philippa launches a search for the fastest declining mammal in the UK, the water vole. What she finds causes both joy and concern.

And the cameras reveal what the life of an ordinary mallard mum is really like, as one night she frantically tries to protect her ducklings from being eaten.

　【春季】Spring

The family follows the fortunes of three very different birds: kingfishers, dippers and moorhens, to see if they can survive what is the most dangerous season of their year.

After having their first nest raided, the kingfishers have now mated again. There is a problem though, and it's something that Charlie has never witnessed in over two decades of studying these small bright birds: the male has run off with another female.

With cameras wired to a moorhen's nest, the family watch the chicks hatch in a tree, and then look on as a tragedy unfolds. And Charlie creates the world's first underwater bird table in order to see how dippers hunt for submerged prey.

Philippa, meanwhile, makes a plan to protect the vulnerable water vole population on the river and charges Charlie with the job of filming them. His mind is elsewhere though; Charlie's busy building the ultimate otter des-res. Equipped with cameras, he wants get an insight into the private life of these elusive creatures.

Spring is a beautiful time on the river, the mayflies have just 24 hours to spin, dance and mate in the sunshine after two years as larvae in the mud, but despite its beauty, the family's film diary reveals that life and death for the creatures on the river are never far apart.

　【夏季】Summer

It's now summer, and Charlie and Fred find out just how tough life on the river can be when they take possession of an injured baby kingfisher.

Charlie tracks down some new otters on the river - a mum and a cub - and takes five-year-old Gus out to try to film them.

Philippa enlists the help of a hundred and fifty thousand new bees to try and help the native riverside flowers but, to her disappointment, they're only interested in the non-native ones. So she decides it's time for action.

At the aquarium, the boys get a glimpse of a rarely-seen underwater predator, the voracious dragonfly larvae.

And conservationist Philippa is keen to protect the small population of water voles on the river by trapping the mink. So the family joins a group of like-minded volunteers and builds a flotilla of rafts, which will hopefully detect any of the passing predators.

　【夏末】Late Summer

Having got to know all the animals on the river, Charlie, Philippa and the boys have lots of questions about them. This episode sees the family testing their theories and conducting a few home-made experiments.

Charlie believes otters can smell underwater and sets up his underwater cameras to test his theory; what he discovers could be new to science.

The family then goes off in search of elusive white-clawed crayfish and they find a few at a secret location known as an 'ark site'.

Charlie is keen to see how many fish it takes to feed a family of kingfishers in a season and sets up an experiment to find out.

And Fred and Charlie test out a super slow-motion camera to see if they can work out how many times dragonflies can beat their wings in a second - the results are quite amazing.

As the season draws to an end, Fred and Charlie get their closest encounter yet with a family of newly fledged kingfishers.

Docu-drama marking the 60th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trial, which was organised as a means of sentencing senior-ranking Nazis at the end of World War Two. The programme offers an insight into the lives of the prisoners, based on true testimonies and records. It also portrays a secret duel between Hermann Goering and his jailer US Colonel Burton Andrus - ending with an account of the events leading up to Hitler's henchman's suicide.

　EP1

The first programme focuses on the staff of Wormwood Scrubs and on the severe, testing conditions they work under.

The film shows officers in the segregation unit attempt to manage one of the prison’s most disruptive offenders. After he smashes his cell they are forced to remove him with shields and body armour.

Then they must counsel him in order to get him to give up a piece of glass he has concealed before he can harm himself or others. Eventually he is moved on for his and the prison’s own good.

The film reveals the shocking truth about the availability of drugs in the prison with as many as ten dealers to one wing. One prisoner talks candidly of how people deliberately commit crime to get into prison to “get rich” by dealing drugs.

The frightening array of home made weapons which prisoners use is shown, including a toothbrush made a lethal weapon by the addition of five razor blades.

The cameras follow the staff as they deal with a suicide in prison and then attempt to keep order on the wing as it erupts in a fit of anger.

The life of one prisoner is in the balance when he self harms. He is estranged from his girlfriend, and can’t cope. He is comforted by a senior officer in the segregation unit.

　EP2

The second programme focuses on what life is like for the prisoners in one of Europe’s biggest and toughest jails at Christmas, when they miss their families most.

Governor Phil Taylor says Christmas is a crucial time and the staff have to be aware of the effect of being away from families has on the prisoners.

The film shows how tension rises in the prison as Christmas approaches. One prisoner carries out a dirty protest in his cell, another wrecks his cell and rips off a metal hatch door to use as a weapon, and one is stabbed in the neck with a pencil.

One prisoner has applied for a transfer to an open prison so he can see more of his family.

“All I want to do in life is be a good Dad, I just want to kick a ball around with my boys,” he says.

He records bed time stories for his sons, and the film shows the boys listening to them at home with their mum.

Another prisoner is seen writing a moving letter to his estranged daughter.

Another inmate finds it almost impossible to survive outside prison.

“I have a nice life in prison. I have a roof over my head, and I don’t have anything to worry about. The people in prison are my family. The prison is my home,” he says.

Christmas Day in Wormwood Scrubs begins with a carol service and a full roast turkey lunch is served. But otherwise it is just another day inside for the prisoners and staff.

SCARRED (Somba tribe): When 20 men invade the camp while wearing death masks and carrying burning torches, Ben panics, is dragged away, and rescued. Days later, Mark and Ben finally witness a bloody ritual in which a baby's face is marked with 300 scars. TAKEN (Somba tribe): At the 'coming of age' ceremony, young women dance to find a mate now that they are finally available to marry. A man must then buy his bride-to-be from her father, and if he can't afford her, he may just have to steal her instead and risk death if he's caught. SACRIFICE (Peul tribe): In a different kind of wedding tradition, a man must prove his love for a woman by whipping himself until he's pouring blood. Just to attend the wedding ceremony, Mark must steer 400 cattle through deadly brush, fight off warring rival tribes, and join a fierce stick fighting competition.

Mars is the ruby jewel in our night sky and arguably the hottest travel destination in the Solar System. Thanks to a robot invasion from Earth that began in the 1960’s, we probably know more about Mars than every other destination in the Solar System combined. Not bad for a planet so cool that the average summer temperature makes a winter in Antarctica seem positively balmy. It might be freezing, there might be nothing for a human to breathe, but of all planets we know, this rocky, red one is the most similar to home. Pack a good spacesuit and plenty of oxygen and prepare to be amazed.

Do you fancy blasting off to the King of the Planets? For a truly out of this world planetary experience, you should head beyond the Asteroid Belt to the largest planet in the Solar System. Welcome to Jupiter, a world so roomy that it could swallow every planet and moon in the Solar System and still have room for more. For 400 years, we have been gazing at Jupiter and wondering. Wondering what sort of worlds the astronomer Galileo had spied all those years ago? What would it be like to pay the King of the Planets a personal visit, to step upon its many moons, or dive beneath its swirling clouds? These questions were partially answered when the Galileo spacecraft slipped into orbit in 1995 for a seven-year sojourn that would prove beyond doubt that the entire Jovian system is worth a return visit.

No planet beats Saturn for sheer jaw-dropping beauty. Majestic, mysterious, and massive, this giant is the pin-up boy of the Solar System. But delve deeper and you find a brooding monster – with supersonic winds, fearsome storms and nowhere to stand. Revolving serenely above it all are the dazzling rings, an entire system of glistening particles nearly as wide as the distance from the Earth to the Moon, yet no thicker than one or two storeys in a modern apartment building. Like cars on a celestial beltway, the ring particles race around Saturn at speeds of 60,000 kilometres per hour, but if you could park a spacecraft in orbit doing the same speed, it would be possible to pick up a ring particle in your hand. Thanks to the continuing exploits of the Cassini-Huygens mission, one of the most successful robotic spacecrafts of all time, Saturn is being revealed to us like never before. The images alone were worth the trip, with stunning vistas of the rings, strange six-sided storms around the North Pole and similar, circular giants girdling the South.

Everyone likes a vacation in a warm climate, but fancy a trip to a place as hot as Hades? Voyage to the Planets heads in towards the Sun to find two quite different sun-drenched worlds that both lay claim to that title. Tiny Mercury, almost invisible in the glare of the Sun, is the place to go for the ultimate suntan. But if your sun protection isn’t up to scratch, you can always get out of the oven by chilling out on the Dark Side. Step into the shade and Mercury’s mercury plunges over 600 degrees. And it’s here, in Mercury’s deep freeze, that things begin to get interesting. There’s an exclusive night show, caused by the Solar Wind that bombards the planet’s feather-thin atmosphere. And on the closest planet to the Sun, there is even the prospect of ice. In Mercury’s eternally shadowed polar craters, radar observations have detected what could be thick deposits of frozen water. And however it arrived on this sun-drenched, ancient surface, it certainly has a story to tell. But it is our nearest neighbour, pale and beguiling Venus, that hides the biggest secret. The Goddess of Love will literally melt your heart and crush your defences at the same time. Once the twin of Earth, it’s thought that Venus had oceans for billions of years and even the likelihood of life.

Got time for a 24 year holiday? Then consider a journey to our most distant and least explored planets, the ice giants Uranus and Neptune. When it comes to public image, the planet with the funny name has always had it tough. But if you think Uranus is a strange name for a planet, perhaps you’d prefer its first name… George. When British astronomer, William Herschel, first discovered the planet in 1781, he christened his discovery after the King of England, George III. But the custom of naming planets after mythological characters ensued and ‘Planet George’ was no more. Cruise down the cosmic highway for another three years and you encounter the last official planet in our Solar System, and a reminder of home. Neptune is the second Blue Planet, the colour courtesy of some mysterious alchemy that’s hard at work in the frozen atmosphere. But does this chilly gas giant who takes its name from the god of the sea really a water world? You’ll need to take the plunge to find out.

Like getting away from it all? Pluto must be one of the loneliest places of all. For more 70 years it was counted as the ninth planet, an isolated but sentimental favourite at the end of the Solar System. But in recent years it has been at the centre of a neighbourhood dispute of cosmic proportions. Just what on Earth caused Pluto to be struck off as a planet? It now seems that Pluto has company… and lots of it. And it’s changed the way we think about our Solar System and even how we all came to be here. Although Pluto remains a distant, fuzzy dot of light at the end of our best telescopes, in 2015 all that will change. Right now, a lonely little spacecraft, known as New Horizons, is making its way to the end of our neighbourhood. And onboard is a very special passenger indeed - the cremated remains of Pluto’s discoverer, Clyde Tombaugh. But Clyde will not rest at Pluto; his destiny is to become humanity’s longest space traveller as New Horizons keeps flying eternally outward to the Universe beyond
