对大多数人来说，死星只是电影《星球大战》里引人注目的毁灭性超级武器的代号。但在现实中，确实存在一些死星正处在晚期，随时会演变为超新星。它们的消亡或者会在宇宙里引起一场伽马射线（GRB）大风暴。

一颗命名为“WR104”的死星，距离地球8000光年，当它消亡的时候，伽马射线会直达地球。

而一个命名为“3C321”的死星星系，对整个银河星系来说，则是最可怕的末日杀手。这个与黑洞伴生的星系会不断向银河星系喷发高能物质，大肆摧残天体。

在最近，死星海山二（西方称为船底座η星）和参宿四（西方称为猎户座α星）在急速消亡，大量燃烧自身的物质，这就令人担忧会不会是地球的末日。

Nearby, Death Stars Eta Carinae and Betelgeuse burn through their fuel supplies as they hurtle toward extinction--and possibly a violent ending that's too close for comfort.
