影片内容介绍

剧情简介

Set against the back drop of awe inspiring geological beauty, a strange scientific adventure sets out to discover how a mineral clad cave network - the height of a 30 storey building and the length of six football fields - came to exist deep below the Guadalupe Mountains in North America.

But this journey soon unravels a multitude of inexplicable phenomena and obscure geological formations, leading to the discovery of extreme rock-eating microbes - a testimony from primordial Earth and a glimpse of life elsewhere in the Solar System.

Acid attack

Geologists believed that all limestone caves were formed by rain and underground water percolating through cracks in the rocks. Absorbing carbon dioxide from the soil, this water becomes weak carbonic acid, nibbling away at limestone, etching out networks of subterranean caves.

However, the intricate cave structures beneath the Guadalupe Mountains in the Carlsbad Caverns of New Mexico are coated in glistening white, gypsum-clad walls. 400m under a desert, the world's largest gypsum chandeliers adorn a cavern called Lechuguilla Cave. There, dazzling white crystals create delicate branches up to 6m in length.

Gypsum is soluble in water, so the 'water flow' theory doesn't fit here. Gypsum has been left copiously encrusting the walls, when it should have been dissolved in the cave formation process. Teams of scientists from the University of New Mexico, Portland State University and Chapman University discovered how such vast mineral coated caverns formed, and their explanation involved the work of a much stronger acid.

Life in the dark

The team visits a more active and dangerous cavern in South Mexico, searching for evidence of a cave in the act of formation. Respirators and poison-gas monitors are required for protection from the hydrogen sulphide gas and lethal sulphuric acid deep inside the Cueva de Villa Luz cave. Yet within this noxious environment life thrives. Microbes, spiders, insects, crabs, and fish all flourish in the complete darkness and caustic atmosphere. The team also discover 'snottites', mucous-like stalactites of sulphur-eating bacteria that drip sulphuric acid onto the surrounding limestone.

These so-called 'extremophiles' are organisms that thrive in conditions that we consider unusual. They live in environments devoid of sunlight or oxygen, deep below the surface of the Earth. They tolerate high and low temperatures, extreme acidity and pressures that would crush surface creatures. They can survive at temperatures of 83°C in the bubbling hot springs at Yellowstone National Park. Colonies clump together in thick mats thriving by volcanic hydrothermal vents, belching out minerals and chemicals in boiling temperatures, deep within the ocean floor.

It is these extreme microbes, feeding on oil far beneath the Carlsbad caves, or reacting in Cueva de Villa Luz that produce hydrogen sulphide. The gas emerges into the caves, where it reacts with oxygen to produce powerful sulphuric acid. This acid dissolves limestone eight times the volume of its weaker cousin, carbonic acid. It also leaves a mineral residue of gypsum.

Other planets

These microbial engineers have been busy hundreds of metres below the surface of the Earth for millennia. They have created geological beauty through biological activity. This process, still ongoing in Cueva de Villa Luz, was completed millions of years ago in Carlsbad and Lechuguilla. These environments are as extreme as the primordial Earth and may even be present under the freezing permafrost of the UV-saturated surface of Mars, or beneath the thick ice of Jupiter's moon, Europa.

分集介绍

 【谁建造了埃及金字塔?】Who Built Egypt's Pyramids?

The great Egyptian Pyramids of Giza have inspired awe and wonder and, quite likely, fierce speculation from the moment they were built. In fact, even the date of their construction has become a topic of debate. Explorer, survival expert, and host Josh Bernstein takes a hard look at the competing theories as to who really built the pyramids--and when. Archaeologists say it was the ancient Egyptians, others argue for an even older civilization. Filmed in HDTV, this fresh and engaging series digs for the truth and goes to extremes to do it! Josh examines the evidence, explores secret chambers in the heart of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, visits the first pyramid ever built, and tries his hand at ancient stone-quarrying techniques. It's a hard-won perspective, but, with the discovery of a mysterious flooded chamber deep beneath the Sphinx, Josh learns what appears to be the final truth.

 【奈弗尔提蒂:木乃伊归来】Nefertiti: The Mummy Returns

Queen Nefertiti was once the most beautiful and powerful woman in Egypt, renowned throughout the ancient world. But she vanished without a trace, lost to the sands of Egypt for more than 3,000 years. Only in the last century did archeologists discover that this legendary queen really lived at all. Since then, though, only fragments of her story have emerged. Host Josh Bernstein, an explorer and survival expert, is determined to put the pieces together and uncover the true story of Queen Nefertiti. Who was this mysterious woman? Why did she disappear? And can her mummy still be found today? To find out, he'll follow a trail of clues into Egypt's most sacred and secret places, exploring dark tombs and coming face-to-face with the truth of at least one ancient mummy's identity.

 【庞贝的秘密】Pompeii Secrets Revealed

In 79 AD, the volcano Vesuvius exploded in one of history's deadliest eruptions, burying the city of Pompeii and other Roman towns along the Bay of Naples beneath layers of ash and pumice. Pompeii was rediscovered in the 18th century, but only recently have archaeologists and volcanologists come to understand exactly how the eruption unfolded, and why it took the people of Pompeii almost entirely by surprise. Intrigued, host Josh Bernstein visits the Bay of Naples, and learns the entire area is built on ancient volcanic rock, some of it still steaming. He climbs the world's most active volcano--Stromboli--an island near Sicily, where ""fireworks"" from the mountain are a nightly entertainment. Back at Pompeii, he searches for clues that might have enlightened the Romans to the growing threat in their midst. And he literally plays with fire as he follows the story right into the heart of Vesuvius.

 【失踪的约柜】Hunt for the Lost Ark

For centuries, adventurers, and archeologists--the devout and determined, and even Indiana Jones--have all searched for the Bible's most sacred lost treasure: the Ark of the Covenant. Yet, despite all its fame, it mysteriously disappeared from the pages of history tens of centuries ago. How could something so powerful and holy simply vanish? That's what host and adventurer Josh Bernstein is determined to find out when he follows a trail that starts where the Ark's story begins--on Mount Sinai. Next, he explores a secret maze beneath Jerusalem's streets, and visits Deir es Sultan, an Ethiopian monastery located on the roof of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. In Ethiopia, he climbs up a sheer cliff to reach Debre Damo, one of the country's most ancient monasteries, and travels across Lake Tana to the place where some say the Ark is kept today. But how close can he get to this mighty and mysterious treasure?

 【圣杯】The Holy Grail

For all its fame, the Holy Grail remains shrouded in mystery. What exactly was it? Could it have survived to this day? Why has it inspired so many treasure seekers? To Christians, it is the holiest of objects, the cup from which Jesus drank at the Last Supper, also believed to be the chalice that Joseph of Arimathea used to catch Christ's blood as he died on the cross. Though now thought of as a goblet, the actual word ""grail"" comes to us from the Latin word gradalis--a flat dish or shallow vessel brought to the table during various courses of a meal. The story itself did not originate until medieval times, when it helped inflame the Crusaders' quest. Host and adventurer Josh Bernstein follows the Grail's trail from Holy Land to medieval French castles to a dark chapter in the Nazi saga, when Hitler financed a search for the Grail to unite a secret society of knights. On the way, Josh learns its true meaning and power.

 【冰人】The Iceman Cometh

In 1991, a pair of vacationing German hikers stumbled onto one of the most remarkable finds in the history of archaeology: the perfectly preserved body of a 5,000-year old man. What made the discovery so important was more than just his state of physical preservation, but also the period of time from which he came--the very cusp of the age between stone and steel. Host and adventurer Josh Bernstein heads for the high Alps on the Austrian-Italian border to discover the latest secrets revealed by the clothes, weaponry, and body of Ötzi the Iceman. Josh faces down a deadly blizzard, helicopters out of near disaster, and comes face-to-face with a stone-cold, stone-age killer. Along the way, he discovers that the Iceman is rewriting our ideas about the life of our ancestors at the dawn of civilization--and he learns much about the character of Ötzi!

 【所罗门王的宝藏】Quest for King Solomon's Gold

Of all the rulers mentioned in the Bible, King Solomon was purportedly the wisest...and the richest! The reason? His access to vast quantities of gold. According to the Bible, the source of his legendary wealth was the goldmines located in the mysterious land of Ophir. Yet, what the Scriptures can't tell us is where Ophir might be found today. Host Josh Bernstein leads us on an epic 4,000-mile journey in search of the lost gold of King Solomon--sailing across the Red Sea, plunging down a Zimbabwean gold mine, and traveling deep into the Ethiopian Bush.

 【玛雅金字塔】Passage to the Maya Underworld

The Maya of Central America were the greatest pyramid builders of the ancient world. The Egyptians built less than a 100 pyramids--the Maya built thousands. But what was the significance of these towering structures? Determined to solve the meaning of the Mayan pyramids, host and explorer Josh Bernstein sets out on a remarkable journey that takes him from the great Mayan cities of Southern Mexico to the hinterland of Guatemala. Josh explores ancient tombs, dives in flooded caverns, and shoots whitewater rapids. Finally, he reaches a secret place in the high jungle of Guatemala where a mountain, a cave, and a river converge. It's here, according to the Maya, that the world was born, and it's this mystical place upon which all Mayan pyramids are modeled.

 【失落的以色列部族:非洲列姆巴人】The Lost Tribe of Israel

The mystery of the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel has fascinated people through the ages. Explorers claim to have discovered evidence of the ""lost tribes"" all over the world, from Australia to Siberia, but few if any such claims have been backed up by solid evidence. But now a provocative possibility about the whereabouts of one of the tribes has emerged--and it's 4,000 miles from Israel--in Southern Africa. Host and explorer Josh Bernstein retraces the amazing journey that the Lemba people claim they made centuries ago. It stretches from the heart of modern South Africa to the ancient stone cities of Zimbabwe...and then onto the shores of the Mediterranean and the city of Jerusalem. And the evidence for this journey is more than anecdotal. As Josh discovers, recent DNA studies point to the Lemba's true origin in the Middle East.

 【纳斯卡线的秘密】Secrets of the Nazca Lines

Etched into the driest desert in the world, the mysterious lines and figures of Nazca in Southern Peru are invisible from the ground. Thought to have been made by the Nazca people, who flourished between 200 BC and 600 AD, in fact, these huge drawings were not discovered until the 1930s--and only then by commercial airline pilots who happened to over-fly them. Ever since, they have intrigued the world. Who built them, and why? Host, explorer, and survival expert Josh Bernstein takes on the secrets of the Nazca Lines, while flying micro-lites and powered para-gliders, clambering through thousand-year old irrigation tunnels, and even recreating rituals with contemporary Native Americans.

 【探寻黄金国】The Search for El Dorado

It was a fable that fueled a thousand fevered explorations into the mountains and rainforests of South America. The mere idea of El Dorado--a city of gold buried in the jungle--fired the imagination of Spanish conquistadors for centuries. But when no city appeared, so the legend faded. Now explorer and survival expert Josh Bernstein begins the search anew. The recent find of a remarkable document has given new life to the search for El Dorado. Eager to follow up on these latest developments, Josh throws himself into an exciting journey that takes him from the icy waters of Lake Titicaca in Southern Peru, to the frozen Altiplano of the high Andes, then deep into the Amazon jungle as he struggles to discover the truth, once and for all, behind the legend of El Dorado.

 【复活岛巨人石像】Giants of Easter Island

On the remotest island on the face of the planet stand the massive, enigmatic stone statues of Easter Island. Who carved them? And why? Ever since Easter Island was first discovered, this tiny pinprick of land in the middle of the Pacific Ocean has baffled scientists. How did the ancients who peopled this place even find it? Host Josh Bernstein sets out to unveil the mysteries of the island and of the remarkable stone heads that its first inhabitants left behind. Delving into the world of ancient Pacific Islanders, he relearns the lost art of Polynesian navigation, recreates the techniques of Easter Island masons, and participates in dangerous ancient rituals--all to solve one of the greatest enigmas of our time: the mystery of Easter Island.

 【阿那萨齐族的秘密】Mystery of the Anasazi

In the American Southwest, there is no more puzzling mystery than the magnificent stone cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde. Why did the Anasazi Indians suddenly move their villages to these perilous cliffs in the 13th century--and then abandon them just decades later--and seemingly disappear from history? Was it drought? Invading tribes? Or an insidious ""cancer"" from within that may have caused them to turn to fierce warfare and even cannibalism? In search of answers, our host, the intrepid explorer and survival expert Josh Bernstein, travels from Mesa Verde, Colorado to remote canyons in Utah where the Anasazi took refuge. Piecing together the story from both archaeologists and Native Americans, he finally ends up, in his search for the truth, in the eerie and desolate ruins of the Anasazi's greatest cultural center--Chaco Canyon.

影片内容介绍

剧情简介

Six British women swap their everyday lives for life as Tribal Wives in some of the most remote communities on earth. Like many women today juggling career, home and family, they feel that something is missing. By spending time in societies where female roles are very different they hope to find answers that could change their lives. The second series features a broad range of communities, crossing continents from jungle to mountain plateau to idyllic island paradise. The series includes tribes such as the Hamar of Ethiopia and the Babongo of Gabon, whose lives have remained largely unchanged for centuries; but also features tribes whose lifestyles straddle the ancient and modern worlds, such as the Yörük of southern Turkey and the Rarámuri of Mexico's Copper Canyon. Each of the Tribal Wives spends almost a month away from home, living with their new families and immersing themselves fully into their new culture - working, eating and sleeping exactly as the other tribal women. As well as the visitor's insights into her hosts way of life and customs, the series reflects the tribe's perceptions of the newcomer and through this, our Western lifestyles

影片内容介绍

剧情简介

BBC Two commissioned a documentary series in which ordinary British women were given the opportunity to travel to the remotest parts of the world and experience life as a tribal woman. In Tribal Wives, six British women gave up their everyday lives and spent a month living with some of the world's remotest tribes – in Greenland, Papua New Guinea, Africa, and Northern Mongolia. The women acted as a 'second wife' by shadowing the tribesman's real wife in her daily duties.

They worked, ate, and slept exactly as the other tribal women in order to experience what it was really like to live in the community. To get a real sense of their new life, all the women spent a month living with their new families and immersed themselves fully into their new culture. Jana Bennett, Director, BBC Vision, said: "The beauty of this series is that it is a modern format that plays to the traditional strengths of BBC documentaries, with the aim of bringing a challenging and unfamiliar world to a wider audience."

Tribal Wives gave audiences a real insight into how tribal women really live, the everyday issues they deal with, their hopes and fears, and their views on life. Viewers will see the women of the tribe speak with passion, emotion and humor about their lives, in a way that has not been explored before. In turn, the series reflects on the tribe's perception of Western culture and garners their views on their visitors: members of the tribe were interviewed each week to assess how the British women were doing, how well each woman was integrating into the community, how useful she was, and the strength of the individual relationships she forged.

Crossing continents to some of the remotest places in the world - from jungle to desert – viewers were able to follow the progress of the tribal wife to see if she was accepted by the community, and was able to rise to the challenges thrown at her by her new life - or whether she simply missed her Western lifestyle too much to truly benefit from the experience. Paul Cleary, Executive Producer, Goldhawk Media, commented: "We were very excited by this project, which took the audience on a journey to remote corners of the world and gave them an inside view of cultures they hadn't experienced before."

 A Dream of Millions

Africa_On_The_Move_screen1.jpg

When the tyranny of apartheid officially ended in South Africa in 1991, few predicted what might happen to the country's economy. But now, with its population of nearly 50 million, its dynamic energy and its vast treasure of natural resources, it has the most powerful economy on the continent and attracts eager investors from around the globe. And who are the money players in this new “beloved country?” In the beating heart of South Africa, in Soweto, we meet a woman who began life sleeping with six siblings on one blanket, selling corn to black commuters. Today, Nancy Nxumalo is a force of nature. She's one of the most influential businesspeople in this vigorous, storied township. A one-time fearless activist now turned mogul, she revels in the tectonic change that is replacing white dominance with nouveau-riche "black diamonds" like herself. Nancy owns three restaurants, as well as a diamond cutting and importing business. And she's just getting started. It's on her relentless quest to expand her financial gains that Nancy introduces us to the extraordinary cast of characters circling in her orbit.

 Power of Song

Africa_On_The_Move_screen2.jpg

Tiken Jah Fakoly is a star. A magnetic presence, he’s mobbed everywhere he goes. A celebrated reggae singer from the Ivory Coast, he was born into a family of traditional West African griots, wandering musicians and social commentators. So it’s not surprising that for him the personal and political are both something to sing about. He enjoys all the trappings of stardom: lucrative recording contracts, wildly successful albums, and fiercely loyal fans who pack his stadium concerts across Africa and abroad. And yet Jah Fakoly doesn’t fit the usual notion of a huge music celebrity. His fearlessness in using songs to take aim at politicians has had a personal cost: he lives in exile in Mali and has been declared persona non grata in Senegal. Clearly not afraid of controversy, Jah Fakoly reveals to us why his music is about passionate love of country and a fierce commitment to social justice. In this music-filled hour, we follow Jah Fakoly as he makes an emotional journey to sing once again in his beloved homeland. And we travel with him from the stage to the two village schools that he funds, all part of his pledge to fight for the poor and marginalized. Because Jah Fakoly fiercely believes that the real freedom all Africans deserve will only start when education is accessible to all. This is an intimate portrait of one of Africa's most powerful and charismatic voices for change.

 The Modern Warrior

Africa_On_The_Move_screen3.jpg

More and more people across Africa are streaming toward the continent’s cities, hoping to invent new lives in the bustling urban centres. Nairobi, Kenya's energetic capital, is home to a massive influx of immigrants, exiles and dreamers. This metropolis of skyscrapers and slums is the backdrop for an absorbing tale of two clashing worlds. Moses ole Samante is an ambitious young Maasai who traveled from his traditional homeland in the countryside to carve out a life in Nairobi, the largest city in east Africa. Although he was mugged on his first wide-eyed day in the city, Moses now runs a successful safari business ― and is full of hope for his family and his nation. But Moses is caught between the traditional life that nurtures him and the one that opens him up to the world. He is a force of change for his Maasai community, as an advocate of education, but he also fights to preserve his people’s way of life. When we meet Moses, we see that making his dreams a reality, both for his people and for himself, is a balancing act that brings him back and forth between city and village, and then across the continent.

 A Woman's World

Africa_On_The_Move_screen4.jpg

In Africa, as in so many other places, sports have traditionally been a man's world. And until recently, women entered at the risk of being scorned or laughed at. But the amazing Sahar El-Hawary and her female soccer team are no joke. She is the first women's referee in North Africa and also the first female member of the Egyptian Football Federation. And she has put women's soccer on the map - not just in her native Egypt but also in the entire Arab world. We follow Sahar through poor and middle-class neighbourhoods of Cairo, a chaotic mega-city that's home to 20 million people. It's here she recruits young women as soccer players and potential referees. Sahar is determined to break down all barriers in her patriarchal Muslim society, but not everyone is willing to change. We meet a young player from a poor area whose family is against women playing sports. Meeting her brothers, we get a sense of the frustrations faced by young Egyptians, who wrestle with restrictions imposed by tradition in many areas of their lives, from sports to romantic relationships.

影片内容介绍

剧情简介

In the heat-withered Serengeti, a hungry lioness spots her unsuspecting prey and springs into action. National Geographic has brought us this and similar scenes before, but Wings over the Serengeti reveals the complex aftermath of the kill. As the lioness struggles to drag her prize to safety, the smell of fresh meat instantly broadcasts across the plains, drawing a wave of scavengers who will move in for the next taste.

A circle of life - and death - on the African plains. In this magnificently filmed saga, nature's most misunderstood creatures are revealed as an integral part of Africa's bounty. Vultures and other scavengers recycle the raw elements of life; if not for them, the plains would be an immense graveyard. From the mighty lion to the lowly dung beetle, each creature has a place in Africa's circle of life. High above the tooth-and-claw drama of the Serengeti, nature's undertakers are watching and waiting. Reviled but vital, vultures bide their time until the inevitable feasting opportunity. Any unlucky carcass is dispatched in a matter of minutes by a feeding frenzy that attracts jackals and hyenas along with vultures. Scavenging insects swarm over the remaining bones and horns. Time-lapse photography and unique point-of-view filming highlight the stunning beauty of WINGS OVER THE SERENGETI.
