　　记录许多着名摄影师的访谈，畅谈他们对摄影的看法，以及他们在参与拍摄电影过程，与各个导演合作的经验。片中并穿插经典片段，对映摄影师的说法，让一般观眾能更了解摄影师的工作与贡献。

　　严格来说，这并不是一部电影，应该说是“关于电影的纪录片”更合适。在这部电影中，我们也能发现以上介绍过的多部影片。例如《梦断情天》的摄影师Nestor Almendros，他在临死之前接受了这部电影的短暂采访。还有《末代皇帝》的摄影师Storaro等人。

　　从某种意义上说，是导演控制摄影师的拍摄手法。例如，《Rosemary's Baby》的导演Roman Polanski，在接受采访时多次提到，有时仅仅需要将摄像机多移动几个厘米，就能使影片的效果得到巨大提升。《In Cold Blood》的导演Conrad Hall，在1967年接受采访时，提到当年是如何选择并搭建了一个牢房，里面囚禁的是Robert Blake扮演的杀人犯，他即将走上绞刑架。雨水不停地打在铁窗上。Hall发现，如果摄像机放在某个特定的角度，雨滴的阴影看上去像Blake脸上的泪水。这个镜头后来成了影院中的催泪弹。

Hawaii, forged in fire, shaken by seismic upheavals, and pounded by the sea, is a fabulous paradox of nature.

The Hawaiian chain of islands, made up of six main islands plus two smaller ones, stretches for more than 1,500 miles through the heart of the Pacific Ocean. It is a place of idyllic beauty. But it is also a land of volcanic fury, raging mountaintop blizzards, dangerous rockslides, monster waves, and even tsunamis.

Kilauea, on the Big Island of Hawaii, provides the most dramatic display of volcanic power. The volcano’s newest cone, Pu`u `O`o regularly spews molten rock and its steady flow of lava in the past two decades has added more than 500 acres to the island.

High above the sea at nearly 14,000 feet is Mauna Kea, which rises above 40 percent of the Earth’s atmosphere, making for ideal stargazing. The summit of Mauna Kea is usually barren and dry, but in the winter the crest experiences blizzards with winds that whip up to 70 miles an hour.

When a blizzard rages on Mauna Kea, chances are good that down at sea level, it’s pouring. Torrential storms are common and can be very destructive. On Oahu, one community found itself in peril after tons of rock rolled down from the hills above. A veil of steel mesh was used to contain the hillside. It will keep the rocks in check for now, but erosion is an inevitable part of the natural order.

On the north shore of Maui waves that originate as far away as Siberia sometimes rise to as much as 70 feet as they break here, earning both the waves and the beach the nickname “Jaws.” Monster waves like these are seen rarely, but lifeguards are vigilant in their efforts to spot them because they can swallow a person in an instant. Still, surfers come from all over the world for a single ride on these shores that may last less than half a minute.

Far deadlier than the waves at Jaws are tsunamis. These fast-moving walls of water are triggered by earthquakes or landslides and have killed more people in Hawaii than any other natural disasters.

Using archival photos and footage, as well as the words of both historical figures and current experts in sociology, psychology and history, this program explores the recurring patterns of violence that have emerged in American society as a result of insurrection, exploitation, anger and ignorance, concluding that if Americans do not overcome their social amnesia and learn from their violent heritage, they may be doomed to repeat it.

Produced in 1995 for the American cable television network Home Box Office (HBO) by Peter W. Kunhardt and Philip B. Kunhardt, with narrration by Julian Bond and commentary by Cornell West.

　Roots of a War (1945-1953)

The end of World War II opened the way for the return of French rule to Indochina. Despite the ties he had forged within the American intelligence community, and his professed respect for democratic ideals, Ho Chi Minh was unable to convince Washington to recognize the legitimacy of his independence movement against the French. French generals and their American advisors expected Ho's rag-tag Viet Minh guerrillas to be defeated easily. But after eight years of fighting and $2.5 billion in U.S. aid, the French lost a crucial battle at Dienbienphu -- and with it, their Asian empire.

　America's Mandarin (1954-1963)

With a goal of stopping the spread of communism in Southeast Asia, America replaced France in South Vietnam -- supporting autocratic President Ngo Dinh Diem until his own generals turned against him in a coup that brought political chaos to Saigon.

　LBJ Goes to War (1964-1965)

With Ho Chi Minh determined to reunite Vietnam, President Lyndon Baines Johnson determined to prevent it, and South Vietnam on the verge of collapse, the stage was set for massive escalation of the undeclared Vietnam War.

　America Takes Charge (1965-1967)

In two years, the Johnson administration's troop build-up dispatched 1.5 million Americans to Vietnam to fight a war they found baffling, tedious, exciting, deadly and unforgettable.

　America's Enemy (1954-1967)

The Vietnam War as seen from different perspectives by Vietcong guerrillas and sympathizers, by North Vietnamese leaders and rank and file, and by Americans held prisoner in Hanoi.

　Tet 1968

The massive enemy offensive at the lunar New Year decimated the Vietcong and failed to topple the Saigon government -- but led to the beginning of America's military withdrawal from Vietnam.

　Vietnamizing the War (1969-1973)

President Richard Nixon's program of troop pull-outs, stepped-up bombing and huge arms shipments to Saigon changed the war and left GIs wondering which of them would be the last to die in Vietnam.

　Cambodia and Laos

Despite technical neutrality, both of Vietnam's smaller neighbors were drawn into the war, suffered massive bombings, and, in the case of Cambodia, endured a post-war holocaust of nightmarish proportions.

　Peace Is at Hand (1968-1973)

While American and Vietnamese soldiers continued to clash in battle, diplomats in Paris argued about making peace. After more than four years, they reached an accord that proved to be a preface to further bloodshed.
