They were like no other bombs ever designed. Rather than plummeting thousands of feet to their targets, they were dropped from extremely low altitudes over water, and instead of submerging they would bounce across the surface like a skipping stone before striking their targets-- German Ruhr river dams that were critical to the Nazi war industry.

THE DAMBUSTERS relives the daring mission flown by the men of the 617 squadron, who set off on the night of May 16, 1943. Of the 19 Lancaster bombers that departed, 8 never returned, victims of the heavy flak fire, the near-total darkness and the requirement that their payload be released at the near-suicidal height of 60 feet. But, as archival footage shows, the attack was a success--two dams were breached, factories as far as forty miles away were flooded and the Ruhr valley industries suffered greatly from the resulting water shortage.

With the end of the First Crusade stationed firmly outside the city of Jerusalem, part two largely covers the siege of Antioch, where knights first employed the aptly-named siege machines. Antioch was a key moment in the Crusades, when things really turned obscenely violent.

This installment focuses on primarily on the Muslims and the Second Crusade, particularly the legendary Arab warrior Nur ed-Din and Saladin. With a declaration of jihad, or holy war, the battle between the Muslims and the knights ultimately resulted in a major strategic mistake by Saladin that shifted the balance of power.
