For years scientists searched for the first key characteristic which had allowed us to make the huge leap from ape to amazing human. At first they thought the development of our big brains was decisive. They even found the fossil that seemed to prove it, until along came the famous three million year old fossilised skeleton Lucy. This quashed the big brain theory, because here was a human ancestor which clearly walked on two legs, just as we do, but had the tiny brain of an ape. It seemed that the development of walking on two legs (bipedalism) was the first key human characteristic, the thing that set us on the road to becoming human.

Lucy soon became even more important. She seemed to defy the laws of evolution. Normally a major evolutionary adaptation like walking on two legs is followed by what scientists call an adaptive radiation. Many related species quickly evolve from an initial evolutionary innovation. It gives a very bushy evolutionary family tree, with many different but related species. Scientists knew that the human branch of the family tree had begun about six or seven million years ago, when the planet of the apes ended. And yet there was no sign of an adaptive radiation. The family tree showed just a straight line leading from the planet of the apes through to Lucy.

　【进化的证据】 Evidence for evolution

All that has changed with Meave Leakey's spectacular new discovery, named Kenyanthropus platyops or, less formally, Flat-faced Man. Her find is the same age as Lucy's species, but also completely different. It's proof that there were two different bipedal human ancestors living at the same time, more than three million years ago. And it's the first sign of the adaptive radiation that the theory of evolution says should have followed the planet of the apes.

　Part 1: The Conflict Ignites

This is the first hour of a six-hour series on the American Revolution. It discusses the origins of the American Revolution, presenting both the colonial and the British points of view, as well as the early military encounters prior to 1776.

　Part 2: 1776

As events get rolling that would lead to the formation of the United States, the big brains meet at the Second Continental Congress to form the Continental Army and place George Washington at the top as general. In other news, Benedict Arnold—yep, that one—dominates on the battlefield and The Declaration of Independence is drafted.

　Part 3: Washington & Arnold

"The American Spirit" tells the story of the Continental Army's struggle against the British from the battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776 to Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga on October 17, 1777. Against terrible odds George Washington, the officers, and the soldiers of the Continental Army exploited the weaknesses of the British Army and convinced the world that the American cause was not hopeless.

　Part 4: The World At War

One of the greatest American victories of the Revolutionary War occurred not on the battlefield but in the Court of France. Ben Franklin helped the American cause as Ambassador to France, convincing the French to enter the war in February, 1778. While Franklin worked in the opulent court of Louis XVI other Americans were fighting the British and their Native American allies on the rugged frontier.

　Part 5: England's Last Chance

After the Battle of Saratoga and the American alliance with France success seemed a real possibility. However, enormous weaknesses in the Americans' strategy remained. In August, 1780, Benedict Arnold was made commander of West Point. In this program Arnold's treachery is analyzed , as well as the role of American privateers fighting the British Navy.

　Part 6: Birth of the Republic

The last year of the Revolutionary War was difficult for the Continental Army. In 1781 the Continentals were financially strapped and battle weary -- they fought on and defeated the British, driving Cornwallis's army from Yorktown in October of that year.

In American Plenty, Simon explores how American optimism about the infinite possibilities of its land and resources is in danger of coming to a grinding halt. Nowhere is it more evident than in the American West, which has always been a symbol of opportunity and freedom. Oil at 4 dollars a gallon may be dominating the headlines, but here it is the lack of water that is an even bigger threat to the American future. The West is in the grip of a years-long drought.

America's optimism about its natural resources has always been spiced with clashes over conservation going back to the first man to navigate the Colorado river, John Wesley Powell. American ingenuity made farming on an industrial scale possible in the early years of the 20th century but at the cost of making Oklahoma a dust bowl. The Hoover Dam, a modern American miracle which used to provide essential irrigation for farming and for the new city of Las Vegas, is not able to cope with the demand for water any more.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan's optimism about American plenty defeated Jimmy Carter's campaign for self-restraint. But in the 2008 election, neither candidate can ignore the challenges facing America as it enters an era of limits.

Simon explores the ways in which faith has shaped American political life. His starting point is a remarkable fact about the coming election: for the first time in a generation it is the Democrats who claim to be the party of God. It is Barak Obama, not John McCain, who has been talking about his faith. In Britain we have always thought of American religion as a largely conservative force, yet Simon shows how throughout American history it has played a crucial role in the fight for freedom.

Faith helped create America - it was the search for religious freedom that led thousands to make the dangerous journey to the colonies in the 1600s. After independence was won, that religious freedom was enshrined in the constitution; America was the first country in the world to do so. Simon also looks at the remarkable role the black church has played, first in the liberation of the slaves in the 1800s, and again in the civil rights movement of the 1960s; neither would have happened without its religious activists. It is this very church that has been the inspiration for Barak Obama, who traces the roots of his political inspiration to his faith.

Simon looks at the bitter conflict over immigration in American history. Who should be allowed to enter America and call themselves an American has always been one of the nation's most divisive issues, and it continues to be so at this election. He traces the roots of this conflict to the founding of America.

The early settlers were themselves immigrants, but they saw America as fundamentally a white and Protestant nation. Simon looks at the key events that challenged this view: the annexation of parts of Mexico in 1848 that made 100,000 non-whites American citizens, the immigration and subsequent expulsion of the Chinese in the late 19th century, and the massive immigration from Eastern Europe during the industrialisation of the 1920s. Each time there have been those who have insisted America must stay white if it's to stay true to itself, and each time they have been defeated by the sheer force of history.

John F Kennedy defined America as a Nation of Immigrants in 1964 and Simon argues that the candidacy of Barack Obama represents the final triumph of the vision of America as a multi-ethnic nation.

　　本片取材于约翰. 哈林三世的《艾格峰之困：面对杀害我父亲的山》一书，片中除了展现瑞士秀美的自然风光外，还对阿尔卑斯山脉的形成、对欧洲气候的影响以及雪崩的形成和救援作了详尽说明。电影最大的亮点莫过于约翰. 哈林三世的加盟出演。他的父亲约翰. 哈林二世1966年在攀登艾格峰北壁垂直路线时因绳索断裂而遇难，40年后当电影再现艾格往事的时候，导演说服约翰. 哈林三世来到艾格峰下，带着妻子和女儿去面对那座山。摄制组请他与瑞士登山夫妻Daniela/Robert Jasper共同攀登了艾格北壁，深刻的理解父亲留给他的遗产，思考人与山之间该是什么样的一种关系？观众可以欣赏到38座海拔超过4000米的雄伟山峰，其中的一颗明珠就是世界上上镜率最高的马特宏峰。影片还再现了历史上人类首次攀登马特宏峰的场景。影片中还能体验到有“世界上最慢的快车”之称的舒适的全景观车厢——“冰川快车”。著名摇滚乐队皇后乐团为影片提供了背景音乐，使得该片气势磅礴，如史诗般壮丽。

1836年间，现今墨西哥市及德州圣安东尼间的墨西哥沙漠地区，曾发生美国史上著名的阿拉莫之役。当年阿拉莫为墨西哥领土，墨西哥因当地发生叛变而派安东尼奥罗培兹圣塔安那将军率大军镇压。圣塔安那应用自己的军事长才，12天便弭平叛变，守军毫无招架之力。守军中有名美国史上的英雄人物大卫克罗克特，或许由于对它的英雄崇拜，美国人始终相信他是英勇战死的，然而本集的历史谜团却提出另外一种论点，认为大卫克罗克特可能并非战死，而是先被俘虏后遭处决的。
