Britain’s decision to bury her First World War casualties where they fell caused a now almost-forgotten controversy. The Americans, however, have always had a scrupulous policy of repatriation, and they maintain a unique army command that tries to bring home the 90,000 servicemen and women whose bodies are still unaccounted for. It swung into action when a French researcher found two bodies just outside the town of Soissons, an hour’s drive from Paris. Buttons, a 1913 medal, and an unopenable wallet were all the effects they had to go on. But the team’s forensic anthropologists found the identity of one of these men. Looking at the real-life CSI-style investigation, this is a slow-moving documentary, enlivened by some judicious and incisive analysis of the war from historian Dr Stephen Badsey. Achingly sad, still, to learn of a man who must have lied about his height to fight for his country, and who died unknown in a French field.
