Series in which Mark Gatiss celebrates the greatest achievements of horror cinema.

He begins by exploring the golden age of Hollywood horror, from the late 1920s until the 1940s, the era of Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. Mark explains just how daring and pioneering these films were, and traces how horror pictures evolved during this period, from camp and subversive to dark and perverse, before a final flourish with the psychological horror of RKO Pictures’ films.

Mark Gatiss continues his celebration of horror cinema by uncovering the stories behind the films of his favourite period, the 1950s and 60s, an era dominated by Hammer Films, who rewrote the horror rulebook with an infusion of sex and full-colour gore - all shot in the English Home Counties. Mark meets key Hammer figures to find out why their films conquered the world, looks at the new boom of horror that followed in Hammer’s wake and explores the cycle of British ‘folk horror’ films such as The Wicker Man.

Mark Gatiss concludes his celebration of horror cinema by exploring the American films of the late 1960s and 70s which dragged horror kicking and screaming into the present. With their contemporary settings and uncompromising content, films like Night of the Living Dead and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre remain controversial, but Mark argues that these films have much to offer. He gets the inside story from a roster of leading horror directors, including George A Romero, Tobe Hooper and John Carpenter.

More than 20,000 Native Americans fought in the Civil War. The film features historical accounts of Native soldiers participating in the Civil War and interviews with descendents of Indian Civil War soldiers. In the war that tore this nation apart, its original citizens played a surprisingly large role. Learn the full truth in this illuminating program.

- Based on the scholarship of historians Thom Hatch and Lawrence Hauptman. - Interviews descendents of Indian Civil War soldiers. - A Native American wrote the final draft of Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.

Few know that twenty to thirty thousand Native Americans fought in the Civil War. This program presents the largely untold story of the First Americans' role in the War Between the States.

The common view of the Civil War is very black-and-white: North vs. South, rural vs. urban, slaveholders vs. abolitionists. But, from the conflict’s origins to the complicated progression of its major events, the truth is far murkier and more complex. This immensely illuminating documentary clarifies one particularly muddy but fascinating aspect of the time: how Indians reacted to and participated in the Civil War.

Discover notable Native American combatants like Ely Parker, Stand Waite, and Henry Berry Lowery. Then go beyond the scholarship and visit with descendants of Indian Civil Warrior soldiers, hearing the family lore of their ancestors' exploits. Far more than just a “White Man’s Folly,” learn the very personal reasons that drew these Native Americans into the fray.

How Native Americans came into service as soldiers

This compelling documentary first aired on the History Channel in May of 2007. The film describes the milieu in which Native Americans came into service as soldiers during the Civil War. The documentary chronicles the lives of three warriors:

Union Civil War General Ely Parker, who was from the Seneca Tribe.

- Ely Parker, who served as Ulysses S. Grant’s military secretary and a Union Civil War general - Stand Watie, a Cherokee leader who sided with the Confederacy and became a Confederate general - Henry Berry Lowery, who helped his tribe survive starvation

An interesting endnote to the documentary is that although Native Americans were used by both the Union and the Confederacy during the war, afterwards they were seen, not as allies, but as obstacles to progress.

This is a very in-depth documentary that tells about Tina’s life and how it all began, from Nutbush, Tennessee to stardom. Not only is Tina interviewed throughout, but other stars give their account of Tina as well. It is more like a documentary and a concert in one. There is video footage of Tina performing from when she first started singing with Ike Turner up to 1992. It was great seeing Tina performing at such a young age and how she continued to evolve into a more beautiful and talented person throughout the years.

Ike Turner is also interviewed from a rehabilitation center, and his interview was very interesting. After viewing the tape, I realized that there is not as much strife between the two like I thought there would be. Ike apologized for his actions, and Tina has moved on with her life. If you enjoyed watching the movie “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, you will definitely love this tape!

An overview of the singer’s career includes comments from manager Roger Davies and ex-husband Ike Turner, as well as Mick Jagger, Elton John, David Bowie, Mark Knopfler. Tina looks beautiful as she gives you insight about herself. -

On the streets of Lagos, it is not the police who wield power but gangs of fight-hardened young men known as Area Boys. Louis spends time with several outfits, joining them as they patrol their turf, clash with local rivals and keep the peace in a brutal and haphazard fashion. The main income for the Area Boys is an arbitrary and unofficial form of taxation, extracted from local businesses and commercial drivers. Louis gets to know the rich and glamorous Area Boy leader MC, a former street youth himself, who has now become a friend of the most powerful men in the city. Taken under MC’s wing, Louis experiences the top levels of the Area Boys’ world from the inside, complete with a tour of MC’s grand residence and extensive shoe collection, and ending in a chaotic mini-riot with gunshots, blood and mayhem.

On the side of the law, Louis rides with KAI, the government’s Kick Against Indiscipline paramilitary task force, as they storm different city districts. With bulldozers and arrest warrants, KAI use their own strong-arm tactics, and are in their way as feared as the Area Boys.

In Law and Disorder in Lagos, Louis wrestles with life in a world in which the forces of law and the forces of disorder are not always readily distinguishable and nothing is quite what it seems.

Ten countries, five deserts and one giant mountain range. It is Simon’s toughest challenge yet - but just what is the Tropic of Capricorn?

Simon Reeve’s journey starts in Namibia, on a remote beach in the Namib- Nauklaft National Park, where the Tropic of Capricorn hits Africa. The spectacular desert scenery makes the area, like much of this vast country, a huge draw for adventure tourists. First stop is Swakopmund, Namibia’s second city and a place with strong German connections – Mein Kampf and photos of Hitler are still on sale in the local curio shop. Namibia used to be a German colony and the country has a dark past: German colonisers killed tens of thousands of locals in a forgotten genocide.

Moving on to Botswana, Simon finds a country that confounds many of the stereotypes of poor Africa. Well-run and perhaps the least corrupt state on the continent, Botswana is making a fortune from tourism and a natural resource that never seems to lose its lustre: the world’s largest diamond mine produces millions of dollars’ worth of stones every week, funding universal education and extensive healthcare. The mining firm has paid for anti-Aids drugs to keep its workforce functioning in a country where 40% of the population has HIV.

The second leg of Simon Reeve’s journey along the Tropic Of Capricorn begins in the northern part of South Africa, a white stronghold during the apartheid era. Simon meets a group of white Afrikaner farmers who are armed and ready to defend their land in what feels like an increasingly hostile world. The farmers still own the prime land and fear it may be taken from them one day – just like it was in Zimbabwe, a short drive North. Thousands of Zimbabweans cross illegally into South Africa every week, fleeing hunger and persecution. At the border, Simon witnesses a dramatic human tragedy as young men struggle past thick rolls of razor wire.

As he heads East along the Tropic of Capricorn, Simon encounters some amazing wildlife around Kruger National Park, where proposals to cull the booming elephant population are causing huge controversy. He then enters Mozambique, a beautiful country still recovering from a brutal civil war 15 years ago. Landmines litter the country but Simon encounters an unusual project to clear them quickly using giant Gambian pouched rats, whose keen sense of smell can detect explosives under the ground.

Much of Mozambique’s coast is a tropical paradise, and tourism is a great hope for the economy. But on one island of exclusive ‘eco-tourist’ resorts, where Leonardo di Caprio has holidayed, Simon discovers a different side of the story. Here the local population lives in poverty. Simon then flies across the Indian Ocean to Madagascar, the world’s fourth largest island. The capital, Antananarivo, is a unique blend of African, Indian Ocean and French colonial influences. In the main market, Simon’s guide encourages him to eat zebu penis soup (an acquired taste) before flying to the remote South of the island. Driving across Madagascar takes Simon across one of the poorest, but most picturesque countries in the world. He passes through spiny forest, a unique habitat of giant octopus and baobab trees, learns how tavy (a form of slash and burn agriculture) has destroyed up to 90% of Madagascar’s primary forest, then witnesses men crawling through dangerous underground tunnels in search of sapphires.

The third leg of Simon Reeve’s journey along the Tropic Of Capricorn begins in Western Australia near Ningaloo Reef, on the migration route of the mighty humpback whale. Simon witnesses the unforgettable sight of female whales nursing their calves before the long trip South to Antarctica, but discovers that their pristine sanctuary may be under threat from plans to build a vast saltpan nearby.

Western Australia is rich in natural resources, but this has not always been a blessing. Heading east to beautiful Karijini National Park, Simon arrives in a region with a sinister history. Nearby Wittenoom Gorge was the location of Australia’s biggest asbestos mine. Thousands have died after working at the mine and the authorities, believing it is the worst asbestos-contaminated site in the world, are demolishing the nearby town. However, a few diehards have refused to leave, including a tough Outback couple determined to stay in the ghost town.

Next, Simon hops aboard a three-carriage road-train which powers its way across the Outback to Newman, site of the world’s largest open-cut mine, which sends millions of tons of ore to fuel China’s booming economy. This is the last town before the unpopulated deserts of central Australia.

Simon’s next stop is Alice Springs, a remote town in the Northern Territory, but also the world centre of Aboriginal art. Many Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory are in a desperate state, racked by violence, child abuse and poverty. Simon arrives at a crucial moment; a powerful government task force has been established to retake control of indigenous communities. In the shadow of Uluru (Ayer’s Rock), Simon discovers conditions in an Aboriginal community that are more familiar in developing countries.

Onwards to Queensland, Simon arrives in cattle country. He stays with a couple whose 183,000 acres have not seen significant rain for seven years. Some experts say that this is the first time climate change has had a serious impact on a developed country. Simon heads East along the Tropic of Capricorn to stunning Heron Island, home to one of the world’s pre-eminent marine research centres. The island is at the southern end of the extraordinary Great Barrier Reef, where Simon learns that climate change threatens to wipe out the coral and the rich wildlife which thrives on it.

On the final leg of his epic journey around the Tropic of Capricorn, Simon Reeve follows the line across South America from Chile to Brazil, meeting fascinating characters and witnessing extraordinary sights.

Simon starts in the rugged Atacama Desert in northern Chile, one of the most spectacular places on Earth. Rising into the foothills of the Andes, Simon finds a beautiful mountain lake that mining firms want to tap for copper mines.

Crossing the Andes, more than 4.5km above sea level and into Argentina, Simon encounters the shy vicuña, a creature kept and sheared for its soft fibre. Vicuña suits can cost £25,000 and they were once hunted almost to extinction.tvb now, tvbnow, bttvb,tv series,tv drama, movie,bt,download ]; m9 q# G2 I5 y: e Simon then meets the remote Wichí forest people and John Palmer, an English anthropologist who has married into a community. Bulldozers are ripping up the forest around the Wichi at an alarming rate, and the Wichi chief tells Simon their entire way of life is under threat.

Neighbouring Paraguay is perhaps the most mysterious and isolated country on the continent. Simon visits a former torture centre in the capital, Asunción, with a doctor who was tortured there when Paraguay was a dictatorship. Paraguay is currently experiencing a ‘soy boom’, driven by European demand for pig feed and bio-fuel. It is a hugely controversial issue, as vast areas of forest are being cleared for the

On the border with Brazil, Simon drives through the town of Ciudad del Este, one of the world’s great duty-free zones – and also a hotbed of smuggling. The nearby Iguaçu waterfalls, where the extraordinary opening scenes of the movie The Mission were filmed, are one of the great natural wonders of the world.

Next stop is São Paulo. A vast metropolis of 20 million people, it is the biggest city in the developing world and home to extremes of wealth and poverty. As the centre of Brazil’s wealth creation, there are more helicopters buzzing around than any other city apart from New York. Kidnapping is a problem for the rich and Simon trains with an armed close-protection squad. In the crime-ridden favelas, there is a project helping to give help to young people and lift them out of poverty. In the neighbourhood that used to be the most violent place on the planet, Simon meets and makes pizzas with young locals who have escaped gangs and drugs.

After months of travel, the journey around the Tropic of Capricorn ends on a beach in the small town of Ubatuba, Brazil, on 22 December 2007 – the day of the Solstice.
