剧情简介

Mega Disasters: Collection Three What would happen if a major catastrophe struck the United States? Using past natural disasters as an example, this detailed – and disturbing – collection from HISTORY examines tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes and even an asteroid impact, to see what disasters could be coming our way. The same geological forces that ripped apart the ancient world still roil beneath the surface today. Will history repeat itself? What are experts doing to avoid a landslide of death and destruction in the event of an eruption at Mt. Rainier? Would the people – and skyscrapers – of present-day Chicago survive a high-speed tornado like the one that hit in 1967? And what would happen if a Category 3 hurricane were to hit New York City? Computer animations, models, and re-creations providing a jaw-dropping view of what a storm like this could do to the Big Apple. History: Mega Disasters examines it all – quakes, droughts, freezes and eruptions. They’ve happened before; will they happen again?

分集介绍

 The Next Pompeii

In 79 AD Mt. Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii and killed 5,000 people. The volcano is quiet at the moment, but the only consistency in Vesuvius' eruptive history is a lack of consistency. The danger zone that surrounds the volcano includes the city of Naples and its one million residents; another two million people reside nearby. Scientists know that when Vesuvius erupts again they won't have much warning and another major metropolis will be destroyed.

 Dam Breaks

Modern dams are marvels of engineering but after decades of neglect the U.S. infrastructure is in crisis and by 2020, 85% of U.S. dams may be near their breaking point. When the South Fork Dam near Johnstown, PA gave way in a storm in 1889, killing 2200 people, it was the worst disaster in U.S. history. Today, with millions of Americans living nearby massive dams, the result of a failure could be catastrophic.

 Glow Train Catastrophe

The U.S. Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission plan to transport 77,000 tons of nuclear waste to a permanent storage facility 950 feet below Nevada's Yucca Mountain. If the plan goes through, much of the cargo will travel through Las Vegas, making an accident there a very disturbing possibility. If history has taught us anything, it's that transporting dangerous goods can sometimes have catastrophic results. Take a look at the potential disaster that such a rail accident would have in Las Vegas.

 Atlantis Apocalypse

Volcanoes can erupt suddenly and without warning, unleashing the most destructive forces on earth. More than 3,500 years ago, the Greek island of Santorini experienced one of the worst volcanic disasters in human history, and perhaps the biggest loss from this mega disaster, the destruction of a civilization that could have changed the course of history. Will history repeat itself?

 Airborne Attack

Anthrax, the most feared of the biological weapons--spores entering the body through the lungs are lethal. In 2001, a letter sent through the US mail, paralyzed the nation when anthrax spores were found inside. Will anthrax be used to create a worldwide disaster?

 Deadly Jet Collision

Since commercial aviation began, the romance of air travel has been marred by the tragedy of crashes. Today the sky above is safer than ever before--but the ground below has become more perilous. That was tragically proven in March, 1977, on Tenerife, part of the Canary Island chain, where 583 people were killed when two Boeing 747s collided at Los Rodeos Airport. It was the world's--and history's--worst aviation disaster. Though decades have passed, root causes for the tragedy at Tenerife remain with us today.

 Toxic Cloud

Chemistry has changed our way of life, including potentially the explosive release of a dangerous chemical. Today, there are numerous facilities where the potential for release of a toxic cloud that could stretch for miles. In Texas City, an average of 22 vessels a day move 60 million tons of cargo through the port and about 97 % of which are petroleum and chemicals for the refineries. Can safer chemicals be introduced in time to prevent a disaster?

 Hypercane

65 million years ago an asteroid crashed into Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. 75% of all life vanished, but could a single asteroid have been the lone killer? Theories about what happened after the impact have been speculated on by the scientific community. Ranging from global warming to worldwide firestorms, ideas have been put forth, but none have been proven. Then in 1995 a new theory claimed that a powerful storm known as a Hypercane caused the extinction. The Hypercane allegedly reaches 20 miles into the Stratosphere and has wind speeds of up to 700 miles per hour.

 Noah's Flood

Could the biblical story of Noah be true? 8,000 years ago, rising sea levels had global oceans surging. With the power of all the world's oceans at its back, the Mediterranean Sea burst through the Bosporus Strait in modern-day Turkey with cataclysmic force. When the flood was over the sea had claimed a landmass twice the size of Ireland.

 Mega Tsunami

In 6,000 B.C., 8,000 years before the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, waves taller than the Statue of Liberty ravaged the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, devastating ancient villages and killing untold numbers.

分集介绍

 Krakatoas Revenge

In 1883, Krakatoa, the most famous and feared volcano on Earth, erupted. Gigantic explosions blew the volcano to bits, triggering massive lava flows that generated huge tsunamis. Nearly 37,000 died the greatest death toll from a volcanic eruption in history. It could happen again. Leading experts speculate on the impact of a similar mega eruption today. Would the resulting colossal ash cloud cause a worldwide catastrophe? Would we survive?

 Comet Storm

13,000 years ago, a large comet exploded over eastern Canada, unleashing a mass of burning fragments that ignited a mega-storm of fire spreading for thousands of miles. Nearly every living thing on the North American continent was destroyed, including an ancient civilization known as the Clovis. With Comet Storm, revisit the moment of impact and the epic aftermath of this major event with mesmerizing 3-D computer animations. See the level of destruction a similar event would wreak on our modern world. And cross your fingers.

 Hawaii Apocalypse

Mauna Loa, Hawaii’s spectacular and sacred volcano, has slumbered for over 25 years. Its last appreciable eruption was in 1984, but it hasn’t really blown its top since 1950 and, before that, in 1868. Back then just a few villages and farms were destroyed, but today it would be an entirely different story. Some of the most exclusive and expensive real estate in the world now crowds her flanks. An entire city, Hilo, is built on lava flows from previous eruptions. Experts agree that Mauna Loa could be on the verge of erupting far more spectacularly than she ever has in recorded history. Using state-of-the-art computer animation, take a look at how an event similar to the 1868 eruption would impact Hawaii.

 Methane Explosion

Produced naturally by many biological processes (digestion, decay, etc.) and collected naturally in natural gas fields and undersea basins, methane has proven to be a useful source of energy. Yet it is conceivable that this noxious, naturally-occurring gas has the capacity to destroy modern civilization. Theories suggest that gigantic eruptions of methane gas from deep in the ocean have occurred regularly throughout history. Mega Disasters reconstructs just what such a horrifying event would be like. Even a small explosion in the mid-Pacific would create wave after wave of tsunamis, wiping out Hawaii and much of the West Coast. Hellish clouds of methane and water would burn across the skies, floods would annihilate inland regions, and most plant life would be destroyed.

 Glacier Meltdown

Prolonged droughts could ravage the interior of the western U.S., leading to catastrophic water shortages. Could we be facing a replay of the Dust Bowl?

 British Superflood

Could the island nation of Great Britain have once been connected to Europe by land? Listen to a new theory and evidence which suggests that the English Channel was created by one of the largest floods ever

 Alien Infection

Could an alien infection cause an epidemic on earth? Some experts believe that spacecraft returning from Mars could bring back a harmful sample or comet dust falling into our atmosphere could cause pandemics.

 New York Earhquake

Take a look at the effects an earthquake would have on New York and its infrastructure--and the havoc it could wreak on the city.

 Mega Drought

Recent warming trends in seawater and air temperature point to a possible mega drought in the next thirty to fifty years. Could we be facing a replay of the Dust Bowl of the 1930s on an even bigger scale?

 Super Swarms

The locust is one of the most destructive and dreaded life forms on Earth. American pioneers faced the largest swarm of locusts ever recorded. The 1,800 mile long and 110 mile wide cloud of insects ate their way through the heartland and blocked the sun for five days. Famine ensued, and thousands faced starvation. According to recent studies, the possibility of such a swarm returning to the United States is very likely. The destruction would be unimaginable.

 Oil Apocalypse

The oil that our world runs on won't last forever. The gap between supply and demand is ever increasing. Will alternative energy save us or is it already too late? What would happen to the world as we know it when our oil dependent industries come to a grinding halt? A worldwide depression is a certainty but a power struggle for the basic necessities of life would be complete chaos.

 LA Killer Quake

It has been a century since the infamous 1906 San Francisco earthquake and Californians live with the knowledge that it's only a matter of time before they're hit again. Los Angeles is the second most populous city in America. If an earthquake hit directly beneath downtown LA, scientists believe that tens of thousands would be killed. Just how would the city respond to a 7.5 magnitude quake?

分集介绍

 West Coast Tsunami

What would happen if a massive earthquake and tsunami were to strike the West Coast of the United States? Experts say it could easily match the catastrophic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in scale and might. A 700-mile stretch of coast, from northern California to southern British Columbia lies just off the extremely volatile Cascadia Subduction Zone

 American Volcano

What would happen if Mt. Rainier were to go the way of Mt. St. Helens? The 1980 Mt. St. Helens blast killed every living thing within a 25-mile radius and unleashed the biggest landslide in recorded history. Now, Mount Rainier, 60 miles east of Seattle, threatens an even greater loss of life and property. This 14,000-foot peak holds more ice and snow than all other volcanoes in the Cascade Range combined, and geologists say that it's not a question of if Rainier will erupt...but when. As we'll see, if people don't have an efficient evacuation plan, the death toll will be incredible.

 Asteroid Apocalypse

What if the same fate that befell the dinosaurs were to strike again today? It has happened before, and it could happen again. What makes storms, earthquakes and other events into natural disaster is not how they occur, but where they strike. MEGA DISASTERS asks the what ifs? no one ever wants to face. A masterful blend of actual footage, computer graphics and interviews with leading scientists and public safety experts explores the outer limits of what could happen if everything went wrong. Many scientists believe that a "killer asteroid" wiped out the dinosaurs and 70 percent of all living things 160-million years ago. How likely is it that a similar event can occur again? ASTEROID APOCALYPSE answers the question in an unforgettable way, showing how such an impact on the West Coast could wreak destruction and chaos that could cripple the nation. But we?ll also see what could be done to mitigate the effects of such a calamity.

 Yellowstone Eruption

What would happen if the "mega-volcano" underneath Yellowstone National Park erupted? The world's largest, most active volcano system exists in the western US. 6,000 years ago, the Yellowstone Volcano erupted. Lava and pyroclastic flows covered 3,000-square miles with ash 3-feet thick. Fossils discovered as far away as Nebraska were foundto have died from inhaling the Yellowstone debris. If--or perhaps we should say when--it erupts again, the Yellowstone "Mega-Volcano" will create a global cataclysm beyond human comprehension. Everything within 150 miles--including the cities of Cody, Wyoming and Bozeman, Montana--will be hit by an 800-degree blast of heat and 200 miles-per-hour winds. Thousands will be killed. That's just the local effects. Half the US will be buried beneath a blanket of volcanic ash. Crops in the Midwest--the world's breadbasket--will be destroyed. And it will take years before crops can grow again. Starvation, epidemics, and social chaos won't be long in coming.

 Earthquake in the Heartland

Could a killer earthquake strike America's heartland? If history proves true, the answer is yes. The 1811-1812 New Madrid Earthquakes (centered in southeast Missouri) rank as some of North America's most catastrophic natural disasters. Stretching more than 160 miles, a system of earthquake faults lurks beneath the Mississippi River basin, loaded and ready to erupt. And it's happened before. Pioneer residents of New Madrid, Missouri were thrown from their beds in the early hours of December 16, 1811 when an estimated 8-point earthquake hit. But it wasn't just one event. Multiple shocks were experienced over the next three months--the largest caused the Mississippi to flow backwards. No earthquake sequence has lasted so long, produced so many shocks, nor created such astonishing phenomena on land and water. The New Madrid Fault remains a seismically active area and experts expect a repeat. The only question is when...

 East Coast Tsunami

Hurricanes. Earthquakes. Floods. Blizzards. Frightening but all too familiar natural disasters. But what about a tsunami wave hitting the east coast of the United States? In this hour, we look at such an event that could be caused by a massive island landslide triggered by a volcano off the coast of Africa. We explore the awesome tsunami recorded by German colonists in New Guinea triggered by a volcanic explosion on Ritter Island in 1888. Leaping forward, we hear from leading scientists about the possibility of a potentially catastrophic collapse of the west-facing façade of a volcano located in the Canary Islands. Potentially 500 times the size of the collapse at Ritter Island, it could trigger a tsunami with initial waves over 900 meters high. A North American city on the eastern seaboard, such as Charleston, South Carolina, would have no more than nine hours to evacuate before waves as high as 40 feet inundated the city, leaving a huge wake of destruction and damage.

 Mega Freeze

Is the increasingly unpredictable weather of the last few years a sign of disaster to come? The "freak" weather of the last few decades--stronger hurricanes, more tornadoes, intense heat waves, to name a few--has signaled to scientists that the climate is changing rapidly and unpredictably. Events such as these were precursors to cataclysmic changes in the past. The great Mayan civilization was knocked out by drought in a few generations. The Little Ice Age battered Europe. Within a decade, freezing temperatures increased and incessant storms brought starvation, disease, and death to millions. Could this happen again?

 New York City Hurricane

What havoc would a major seismic event wreak on America's densest - and tallest - metropolis? Experience the full force of nature's fury in this earth-shaking episode! Earthquakes seem to be more of an L.A. thing, but New York City is actually the site of frequent seismic activity, including major quakes in 1737 an 1884. Picture a busy midweek morning in the heart of Manhattan with hundreds of thousands of commuters on their way to work. Suddenly the ground shakes violently, and a deafening roar thunders through the city. Earthquake! The beaches turn to quicksand, high-rise buildings sway and elevators strand thousands. The subway, bridges and tunnels, and the surface streets become hopelessly clogged. Millions are in peril, trapped on a small island. The immeasurable damage to infrastructure would take many years and billions of dollars to repair

 Volcanic Winter

The largest volcanic eruption of the past two million years occurred on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, 75,000 years ago. The impact from the super volcano Toba decimated the local habitat, but gas, ash and debris from Toba made their way around the planet and formed a shield in the atmosphere that deflected the sun's warming rays. Temperatures plummeted and the planet was thrown into a volcanic winter and may have even pushed the planet into an ice age. 3-D computer animation will recreate the storm and unveil how this one volcano could have brought humanity to the edge of extinction.

 Tornado Alley Twister

What would happen if an F5 tornado tore though Dallas, Texas? . In 1999, a twister touched down in Oklahoma City. But this was not a typical Midwestern funnel cloud--it was a "Mega Tornado" with winds swirling at 318 miles per hour. It scoured the earth for 85 minutes along a 38-mile path, killing 43 people and causing hundreds of millions of dollars of damage. TORNADO ALLEY TWISTER revisits that storm and then asks what would happen if a similar fate were to befall Dallas.

 Comet Catastrophe

A comet, crashing into the Pacific Ocean could cause millions of casualties followed by a lethal tsunami, earthquake, torrential rains and a nuclear winter. Is the next massive impact just around the corner?

 Gamma Ray Burst

450 million years ago, nearly all life on Earth was eliminated. Could this mass extinction have been caused by rays from outer space? And it could happen again?! What makes storms, earthquakes and other events into natural disasters is not how they occur, but where they strike. Gamma ray bursts occur randomly and often. At times, they light up the reaches of deep space like fireworks. Just ten seconds' exposure to one would spell doom for Earth.

影片内容介绍

剧情简介

希尔帕菲提斯追踪那些希望将生意扩展到印度、巴西和越南这三个新兴市场的英国企业家们。(

分集介绍

 【越南】Vietnam

Dragon's Den star Theo Paphitis follows the fortunes of brave and bold British companies trying to expand in three of the world's most dynamic emerging markets - India, Brazil and Vietnam. While Britain is still stuck in a recession, these economies are booming. There couldn't be a better time than now for British businesses to seize these opportunities in some of the world's fastest-expanding but risky markets - but how easy is it going to be?

 【印度】India

Theo Paphitis travels to India to see if three intrepid British companies can succeed in one of the fastest expanding economies in the world. With cultural ties going back centuries, India and Britain have many things in common. But is doing business one of them? Or are we worlds apart?

Theo travels to Mumbai, with its 14 million population, and central India to see how three very different British companies, with three very different products, try to make their dreams a reality. There's luxury watch manufacturer Bremont, whose stainless steel watches cost up to six thousand pounds a pop. Regenatec, a company trying to find enough green oil to sell their diesel converter kit in the biggest diesel market in the world. And Marmite, the classic British breakfast spread. Will the Indians love it or hate it?

All three companies have got their work cut out. How will Bremont's very expensive, highly-engineered but very understated stainless steel watches go down in a country which likes its watches to be made of gold? How will Marmite sell a very British product to a country that's hardly short of strong flavours of its own? And how easy will Regenatec find it to locate large volumes of ethically produced pure plant oil, so as to take on dirty diesel, in a country whose biofuel industry is still in its infancy?

With its fiendishly complicated import duties, its very different bargaining culture and its sheer size, doing business in India is going to be anything but straightforward for our British companies. What sort of pitfalls will trip them up when they're trying to do business in a very different culture?

 【巴西】Brazil

In the last programme in the series, Theo Paphitis travels to Brazil to follow three intrepid British companies trying to succeed in one of the world's most exciting markets. The Brazilian economy is still expanding, but what can Brits sell them that they haven't already got?

Theo travels to Brazil's business hub, Sao Paulo, to Bauru (in the heart of sugar cane country) and to the glamorous Rio De Janeiro to chart the fortunes of three British companies with very different aims and ambitions. There's Sleek Make Up, an East London company specialising in cosmetics for darker-skinned women. Dreamaid, a website aimed at helping the world's poorer artists sell their wares to richer customers around the world, and Cadbury trying to enter the Brazilian chocolate market, one of the fastest-growing in the world.

But there are dangers ahead. In the UK, Sleek relies on having its own dedicated stands, where you can try on the make-up yourself. So how are they going to sell make up in a country where the supermarkets just put it in bubble-wrap and sling it on the shelves, so you can't test it? How does a global giant set about selling its Creme Eggs and Dairy Milk in a country where the taste in chocolate is very different to that of the British? And how can Dreamaid succeed in the hardest task that faces any internet start-up - to get people to visit your site?

The Brazilians are famously laid-back and easy going, but is doing business there going to be easy?

影片内容介绍

剧情简介

Tony Robinson presents a series that aims to give some idea of what it must have been like to live under the ferocious and constant bombardment of the Blitz, and to explain why it failed ultimately.

Blitz Street itself is a row of terraced houses specially built on a remote military base and is subjected to a frightening range of large-scale high explosive bombs and incendiaries similar to those dropped by the Luftwaffe.

With precise measurements of the supersonic blast waves and flying shrapnel, Blitz Street reveals the devastating impact of real explosives on bricks and mortar, allowing Ministry of Defence scientists to study the awesome power and mechanics of Second World War bombs.

High-speed cameras operating at 1,000 frames per second show in amazing detail how houses could progressively collapse from one end to another; how people survived by sheltering under the stairs; or how they had their clothes ripped from them or were lifted onto the roofs of their homes.

分集介绍

 EP1

The first episode in the series focuses on the outbreak of the Blitz in September 1940.

The first bombs used against Blitz Street, a row of terraced houses specially built on a remote military base and subjected to a frightening range of large-scale bombs and incendiaries similar to those dropped by the Luftwaffe - are the SC50 (25kg of TNT), the most common bomb dropped on the first day of bombing in London, and the SC500 bombs, which contained 250kg of TNT.

The programme features emotional eye witness testimonies, giving a fantastic insight into day-to-day life on the home front and the immense psychological damage caused by the bombardment.

 EP2

Blitz Street is on the receiving end of one of the largest bombs the Luftwaffe ever dropped on Britain: the SC1000, nicknamed 'The Hermann'. A bomb this large was designed to cause massive damage to the infrastructure of industrial Britain.

With the aid of harrowing and moving eye-witness testimonies, the programme also recounts the Luftwaffe's horrendous bombing of Coventry on 14 November 1940 and the campaign to destroy Britain's manufacture of munitions.

 EP3

In the summer of 1944, British hopes for an end to the war were raised by news of the D-Day landings. However, a few days later Hitler sent over the V1, the first of his new secret Vengeance weapons.

Nicknamed the 'doodle bug', the V1 was a jet-powered pilotless plane packed with a powerful form of explosive containing RDX.

The people who saw it talk about witnessing these buzzing planes pass over and the terror that came when the engine stopped, because that would mean they were about to fall. The V1 is the next bomb detonated over Blitz Street.

 EP4

Blitz Street endures the most powerful bomb of World War II: the massive V2 rocket.

Travelling at over 3,500 miles an hour and with a range of over 200 miles, the V2 was designed to deliver a knockout blow to Britain.

Unlike the other bombs that have been detonated on Blitz Street, the V2 bomb is buried three metres below ground. Due to its supersonic speed, by the time the V2 detonated it was well beneath the surface.

The programme also sums up why the Nazi blitz bombing campaign failed, the lessons to be learnt from the experiment, and, ultimately, how the people who lived on streets like Blitz Street faced the nightmare of total war but came out stronger.
